Canal Z Right-of-way improvements to begin August, 2013

Sunshine Water Control District will begin making improvements to Canal Z, a main drainage waterway for the District’s West Basin, during August, 2013. This Canal, located south of Royal Palm Blvd, flows eastward from the Sawgrass Expressway to Coral Springs Drive, connecting to the District’s West Outfall Canal and Pump Station #2, where excess water is discharged into the C14 Canal. Every District canal in the Corporate Park, Westchester and Country Club sub-divisions flows south into Canal Z , making it a critical component for flood control in these neighborhoods.

The initial improvements during August through October will involve clearing the District’s right-of-way along the south side of the canal. This work will allow for construction access to dredge and widen Canal Z later this year, after the current hurricane season ends. The removal of overgrown foliage and obstructions along the Canal Z right-of-way will also facilitate the District’s regular canal maintenance.

The contractor selected to perform the Canal Z improvement work is Superior Landscaping and Lawn Service. Superior employees will have company uniforms and will conduct all work on District property.

Superior will be starting the right-of-way clearing on the south side of Canal Z at Coral Ridge Drive, working east toward Coral Springs Drive. It is anticipated that this section of the clearing work will take approximately 3-4 weeks. Following that, Superior will conduct right-of-way clearing on the south side of Canal Z, west of Coral Ridge Drive to the Sawgrass Expressway. Finally, the north side of Canal Z right-of-way will be cleared from the Sawgrass Expressway to Coral Springs Drive, in preparation for the canal dredging and widening beginning in late 2013 and into early 2014.
